10 Steps To Maximizing & Organizing Your Closet Space

Being organized is a change of mindset. Most people are under the impression that in order for your closet to be organized it has to look  picture perfect. However, by tidying the untidy you can improve your lifestyle and can achieve a total wardrobe makeover in a snap! And although downsizing requires a minimalist approach, as you read along you will learn that clutter-free spaces are the appropriate road to success.  An organized closet  be incredible both for productivity and mental health. My ultimate goal is to help you organize your closet in 10 easy steps:

Step 1 : One of the greatest challenges when organizing a closet is when you find yourself frustrated trying to decide what looks good and what doesn't. So, I propose to empty out your entire closet, then either donate or toss out all those pieces that you haven't worn in a year.

Step 2 : A white closet! White or neutral walls, and white or clear acrylic hangers. The goal is to aim for a clean look.

Step 3: Declutter your wardrobe by separating your clothing in three categories. You should have a pile for the clothing you will donate, a  second pile for the ones you will toss out, and a third one for the clothes you intend to keep. Also, consider getting rid of the shoes and accessories that are out of style or that you haven't worn in ages.

Step 4: Properly store seasonal items. Free up space in your closet by removing seasonal pieces that will not be part of your life for some time. If your have the appropriate bed frame for this, you can consider storing off-season clothes in an under-the-bed container with rollers. Otherwise, I suggest to separate off-season clothes by size and category : Pants, Sweaters, Shirts, etc.. This way, every time the season changes you will not break your back carrying a huge bulky box from the room next door. Also, as the season changes and you need to swap clothes, you can introduce to your closet the small batches instead of the big bulky option. Keep in mind to purge and leave out those garments that are stained or need repair before you start this whole procedure.

Step 5: Use matching hangers. Although I vote for neutral colors, there are many options available: velvet hangers, white or oak wood hangers, and also clear acrylic ones. It all depends on your budget and taste. Most of us buy whatever hangers are the cheapest. Although the benefits in investing a little more on good quality hangers will pay off when you no longer have to worry about garments getting snagged on ultra-thin wire hangers.

Step 6: Make optimal use of your space by adding shelves, hanging racks, and cubbies, Search for the options that best work for you and don't buy any space savers or organizers until you have purged your wardrobe previously. Get creative with  organizing your closet, but always consider different options to maximize your space, like: moving the  rods higher, an over-the-door rack, drawer and shelf dividers.

Step 7: "A place for everything and everything in its place!" Find the appropriate home for items that don't belong in your closet. Paperwork, batteries, school pictures, and school notes don't belong in your closet, so you will need to find a new space for them.

Step 8: Hang delicate items like silk, rayon, satin,  velvet, button down shirts, dresses, dress skirts, and dress pants. Then, use drawer space for storing clothes that are folded, like: sweaters, casual shirts, heavy pants or denim, and t-shirts. Make an effort to stay organized by designating a specific drawer for each of those items before loading them.

Step 9: Arrange your wardrobe neatly by arranging your clothing by category and creating a system that allows easy  access. Organizing your clothing in categories is a better option than separating by colors and styles. Categories like for example separating your long sleeve blouses from short sleeve blouses will allow you to easily see what you have in your wardrobe.

Step 10: Organize shoes and accessories. If you don't have a standing rack or shelves for shoes and you are not in  love  with the over-the-door shoe hangers, them use clear containers that can be easily stacked either under your hanging clothes or on your top shelf. Another great option for storing shoes is a rolling cart. Keep in mind to store your shoes each facing in opposite direction in order to maximize storage space.

I hope this organizing tips work for you as they have for me and that you finally stop spending hours trying to find that cute outfit.
