How To Organize A Playroom: 10 Tips That Never Fail

We can’t help but dream about the Holiday Season ahead…but as any parent knows, decking the halls isn’t just about filling stockings and Christmas decor, it also comes along with toy overload in our kids’ cubbies. Playrooms can go from orderly to chaotic in an instant, and this is why we need to set up the right storage system before those new additions add up to more clutter in this room.

Although having space to play can be a challenge, knowing how to organize a playroom, and having the right storage system in place can make it a lot easier for anyone (even kids) to get toys out AND put everything back. So let’s get started and don’t dread the mess, because we would like to help you get through the Holidays as smoothly as possible. We are sharing with you the 10 best tips to help prevent the playroom chaos:

Tip 1: Apply the 1:1 Rule. Purge before you start the organization process and before you introduce more toys to your kids’ playrooms. If you are anticipating the number of new toys that you will buy for the Holidays, donate at the least the same number of toys from each category. You want to also clean up the space by tossing out missing pieces or broken toys that no one can enjoy.

Tip 2: Keep Toys Easy To Access AND Put Away. Your playroom itself will dictate the best storage system. Does your room have a closet? Ample wall space for shelves? Or do you need free-standing cubbies and bookshelves? Whatever your space situation looks like, just keep in mind to use toy containers that your kids can easily access and use. For example, open bins eliminate the struggle with lids and are great for blocks, toy cars, small gadgets and stuffed animals. Be sure to place bins full of favorites on easy-to-reach shelves.

Tip 3: Add Drawers. A drawer unit or stackable drawers make use of vertical storage space while giving your kids easy access to what's inside. These toy drawers are also great for sorting and separating LEGO blocks by size and color. Plus, these types of storage containers can easily be used to store clothes and accessories when your kids outgrow the playroom.

Tip 4: Use Kid-Friendly Labels. Containers helps make it easy to find and put toys away. If your kids are younger, consider using picture labels.

Tip 5: Make Use Of Your Doors. Over-the-door shoe racks are a great alternative. If you don’t have for instance a designated room for toys or have limited closet space, these racks are a great way to store everything from dolls to small stuffed animals and handheld games.

Tip 6: Toy Rotation: Have a place to put things away. Toy rotation helps keep the number of toys to a minimum. If your child has a few similar kinds of play-sets, only have one out at a time. Put the rest in a bin in a closet and every once in a while switch the sets out. Rotating toys like this keep their options fresh, without having too many choices and thereby limiting creative play.

Tip 7: Put Art Supplies in Easy to Move Bins. I want art to be easy to do, but yet not so easy that my daughter can decide to paint whenever (or wherever!). Your kids probably have art supplies that you want to keep away to prevent a messy situation, items that aren’t as accessible. Designate a few bins for easy access of arts and crafts items. In other words, place them enough to reach the supplies on their own, but not right in front of them all of the time. This way they can easily start a fun project without digging through drawers.

Tip 8: Don't Forget Display Space. From the latest drawings to treasured LEGO creations, don't forget to give your kids a way to show off what they've accomplished. Photo display strings with clips are an easy way to decorate and display artwork, while display cubes and shelves are great for highlighting treasured possessions. My son loves legos. Everything about legos. Whatever it is that your kids’ love, make that the center of the play area and make it the easiest to access.

Tip 9: Involve your child in cleanup and Don’t expect perfection. It’s not going to happen. I want our playroom to be a place where our kiddos can have fun, be creative, and learn through play. involve your child in categorizing and organizing toys, so he knows where everything goes and can help put things away at the end of the day. It's an excellent exercise in sorting, and if you have more toys than space, it can also be a lesson in charity. Open up a worthwhile discussion about donating some of his less favorite items that he simply doesn't have room for. After all, fewer toys means easier clean up!

Tip 10: Use seating that doubles as storage. We picked up a few storage ottomans and we’ve used them to store all kinds of toys over the years. The kids don’t sit on them a lot, but they sure are nice for adults who can’t get down on the floor easily.
